Artist Statement
“Many people seek places that will produce a feeling of reverence, awe and wonder when in the presence of something sublime. Awe and wonder as a feeling expands your perspective and inspires new ideas. Concrete architectural forms, urban structures decayed by natural forces and the contrast of light and dark within an urban landscape, are some of the elements that spark awe and wonder in me”.
As an artist, Sally Tyrril searches for the feeling of the sublime in her work and the environment. Architecture, especially Brutalist architecture, has a powerful influence on her work and practice. Clay, by its nature, is an apt medium for bringing a sense of monumentality and permanence into sculptural forms. Sally uses heavily grogged clay, slip and very little glaze, allowing the sculptures to feel raw and exposed. Moulded forms of repeated elements create a sense of unity and visual rhythm. Although these sculptures are not on the scale of a Brutalist architectural building, Sally’s aim is to portray the same sense of wonder one feels when in the presence of these enormous structures.
